LOS ANGELES - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that the ICANN 2022 DNS Symposium (IDS) will be held in person 15–16 November 2022 in Brussels, Belgium. This two-day event marks a return to face-to-face meetings. In 2021, the event was held entirely virtually. In 2020, it was canceled because of the pandemic, according to the official website of ICANN.

IDS will be held immediately before the IANA Community Day on November 17 and a workshop on DNS abuse (17-18 November) organized by eco, an Internet industry association in Europe. As in previous years, the symposium offers a forum for individuals to discuss technical topics related to the Domain Name System (DNS).

This year, ICANN will invite speakers focusing on centralization and diversification in the DNS. According to several studies, the devices of more than 20 percent of Internet users are configured to use public DNS resolvers. A small set of registry service providers are responsible for a large set of top-level domains (TLDs), which means that an attack against a single service provider's infrastructure can affect a large percentage of Internet users. At the same time, there are more public resolver services and TLDs than ever. This raises the question whether the DNS is overly centralized or adequately diversified and is the theme of IDS 2022.

The ICANN DNS Symposium is intended for attendees with a clear understanding of the DNS and its operations, such as generic top-level domains (gTLDs) brand and geo registries, ICANN-accredited registrars, gTLD resellers, gTLD hosting providers and registry service providers.
