SINGAPORE - IP Week@SG, a global conference (25-27 August 2020) organised by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), will go virtual this year and focus on the role of Intellectual Property (IP) and Intangible Assets (IA) in helping companies amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the official website of (IPOS).

“COVID-19 has disrupted businesses and society in an unprecedented way. Yet, innovations, especially in the digital space, have flourished and presented companies with new opportunities to grow and thrive. Innovation and IP are symbiotically linked. Although there has been an increase in IP-related challenges as a result of COVID-19, we have also seen an increase in IP opportunities at the same time. Leading industry players and heads of global IP offices will gather virtually during IP Week@SG to discuss these issues and how companies can leverage IP/IA to improve cashflow, grow new business revenue streams and reduce exposure to costly litigation due to IP infringements in this crisis,” said IPOS CE Rena Lee,

Complimentary webinars during IP Week@SG will address IP/IA issues that have come front and centre as a result of COVID-19. For example, as scientists around the world urgently try to find a vaccine for COVID-19, what role does the IP regime play in accelerating/enabling the development, production and distribution of the vaccine? With the digital explosion brought about by social distancing, how can content owners protect their IP in the virtual space while remaining commercially viable? With brands moving online to capture new markets and mindshare, what IP strategies should companies adopt to optimise returns while protecting their intellectual property?

Participants will also be able to hear from the heads of IP offices and organisations from around the world including China, Japan, Singapore, United Kingdom, United States of America, as well as leading companies like ONE Championship, The Lego Group, Razer and Zouk Group.

Mr. Edwin Tong, SC, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Second Minister for Law, will deliver an opening address on 25 August, 2 pm (Singapore time).

IP Week@SG 2020 will also feature, for the first time, an “Innovation for Humanity Award” to recognise seven innovations by Singapore companies to battle COVID-19 and the role that IP played. These companies brought COVID-19 test kits, masks, diagnostic kits, swab booths and self-cleaning disinfectants to the market.

In addition to the six live webinar sessions, the “Innovation for Humanity Award” and replays of past sessions of Global Forum on Intellectual Property (the keynote forum at the annual IP Week@SG), there will also be other associated events happening alongside IP Week@SG 2020.
