CAIRO - Upon a joint invitation extended by the Egyptian Patent Office, the Ministry of Scientific Research in the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, a regional workshop was held to discuss the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and attended by representatives of Arab countries.
In his keynote speech at the conference, HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh addressed the weaknesses of the protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) on the Internet, except for the protection available for domain names and patent rights.

He demanded that the period of patent protection over the Internet would be less than 20 years due to the rapid development in information and communication technology.

He stressed the need to develop a special protection system for patents available on the Internet since they differ in their nature from patents related to commodities and goods.

Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh mentioned that he sent a letter to the Senate President, Mr. Joe Biden, the US vice-president that included some suggestions related to the need for an Internet governance system with the US preserving the complete IPRs for this system.

Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh underlined the need for rapid development in patent offices and in offices for IP services and turning them into institutions that provide smart services, pointing out the fact that Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property became a smart company that provides IP services is the secret for its success that turned it into one of the pioneering global companies within its expertise.
