KSA to Establish an Independent Unified Commission for IPRs

RIYADH - The KSA-based daily newspaper Al Sharq reported today that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture and Information and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry will seek the approval of His Majesty King Abdullah concerning the establishment of a commission for Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) to unify the IP Departments in the two Ministries. These IPRs include copyright, patents and trademarks.

Head of the Copyright Department at the Ministry of Culture and Information Rafiq Al Akili told Al Sharq newspaper that committees representing the two ministries were formed to study the merging of the departments in charge of IP. The study according to Al Akili will last for six months stressing that it wasn’t yet determined if it will be a commission or an agency waiting for the meeting of the committees which didn’t meet till the moment.
