Estonian Internet Foundation Prepares Plan to Increase Popularity of .EE Domain

TALLINN  - In an effort to increase the number of registered .ee domains, the Estonian Internet Foundation, which is responsible for managing Estonia’s top-level domain .ee and its sub domains, has devised a new strategy that is to be implemented by 2015.

The plan, among other things, includes organizing a marketing campaign to increase the popularity of the .ee domain and offering more options to users, such as one-letter domain names and shorter contracts.

Another issue that will have to be addressed is the price of owning a domain name, which is perceived as too high by many. In March the annual fee for owning a domain was reduced from EUR 17 to EUR 15.

The introduction of the annual registration fee, as part of the domain system reform launched in 2010, sparked much criticism considering that domains were registered for free before.
