INTA Announces Seventh Global Congress on Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy in Turkey

NEW YORK - The Seventh Global Congress on Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy will take place in Istanbul, Turkey April 24-26, 2013. According to the International Trademark Association (INTA), the event is expected to attract over 1,000 participants from around the world for what has become one of the largest international gatherings around the issue of counterfeiting.

Initially launched in 2004, the Global Congress is a public-private partnership that brings together government, industry, non-governmental organizations and enforcement agencies to raise public awareness of counterfeiting and piracy and drive coordinated action to combat it.

The event is convened by INTA and its Global Congress Steering Group partners: INTERPOL, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the International Chamber of Commerce’s (ICC) Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy (BASCAP) initiative and this year’s host, the World Customs Organization.

Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will give the keynote address at the opening ceremony on April 24 at the Lutfi Kirdar Convention Center.

INTA President Toe Su Aung will speak at the opening ceremony on behalf of the Association. Other speakers include: Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Ömer Çelik; Secretary General of the World Customs Organization Kunio Mikuriya; Director General of WIPO Francis Gurry; Secretary General of INTERPOL Ronald K. Noble; Co-Chair of BASCAP Shelley Duggan; and President of the Turkish Chamber of Commerce Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu.

A press conference will take place from 11:15 to 11:45 am, immediately after the opening ceremony.
