Effective Patent System to Promote Innovation/ Seminar

MUSCAT - The national seminar on "Effective Use of Patent System to Promote Innovation," organized by the Intellectual Property Department in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) began at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry today, according to Oman News Agency. 

The two-day seminar comes within the framework of the WIPO endeavors in conjunction with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to increase knowledge about the effective use of the patent system to promote innovation. 

The opening ceremony of the seminar was patronized over by Ahmed bin Sulaiman al-Maimani, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry for Administrative and Financial Affairs.
Ahmed bin Sulaiman al-Maimani said in a statement that this seminar comes within the Ministry's interests in the protective side of inventions and creations, as well as within the framework of coordination aspect between intellectual property and business strategy. 

He added that there is an ongoing cooperation between WIPO and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. He said that this seminar is designed to raise awareness in these areas and access to the national and international documents and patents, protection of innovations and inventions, alternative mechanisms for protection, as well as focusing on innovation and strategies, harmonization of commercial strategies and intellectual property, the role of the patent system in promoting research in the public sector and universities, besides the challenges faced by local innovators and the relevant system of trade information protection. 

Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Sa'eedi, Head of the Intellectual Property Department at the Ministry of Commerce and industry delivered a speech at the outset of the opening ceremony during which he said that such seminars and workshops in the field of intellectual property come to improve the professional, artistic and scientific capabilities of participants, in addition to enriching their knowledge and expertise in the areas of applications of intellectual property laws and treaties, both industrial property laws and laws on copyright and neighbouring rights. 

He added that the seminar seeks to promote the subject of patents through seeking the assistance of experts from WIPO and from various providers of assistance to intellectual property offices to improve their services. 

On her turn, Tomoko Miyamoto, Head of the WIPO Patent Law Section, Patents and Innovation Division and Representative of the WIPO Director-General delivered a speech during which she said that the word patent laws began around 14th to 15th century. The patent system has evolved since then and is working to stimulate innovation in support of development and improving the quality of life.
She pointed out that one of the most important objectives of the patent system are to promote innovation and support dissemination and transfer of technology and the enactment of the law, which provides an environment that positively supports technology innovation. 

She added that this seminar will also explore the ways public patent information can be utilized for technology and business analysis. 

Today, lectures were delivered on patent law and protection of innovations, protection of inventions abroad, topics related to The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) in the Sultanate and its patent system, services of the Intellectual Property Department for promoting innovation and utility and the alternative mechanism for the protection of inventions.
