US-EU Dialogue on Privacy, Data Protection a Good Sign for Enhancing Consumer Trust, Promoting Transatlantic Trade

WASHINGTON, DC - The Business Software Alliance (BSA) applauded in a press release US Commerce Secretary John Bryson and EU Commission Vice President Viviane Reding for advancing the transatlantic dialogue on privacy and data-protection issues at an important time in the continued evolution of the Internet economy.

“It is encouraging to see healthy dialogue underway between the US and EU on privacy and data-protection issues. The continued growth of the Internet economy — especially the cloud computing market — requires laws to be interoperable enough to allow commercial data to flow across borders,” said BSA President and CEO Robert Holleyman after Bryson and Reding released a joint statement on the progress of a high-level US-EU conference held in Washington and Brussels on Monday.

“The joint statement released today by Secretary Bryson and Vice President Reding underscores that US and EU laws and regulations can be different and still promote common principles,” Holleyman said. “It is heartening that both parties share the fundamental goals of protecting people’s privacy while fostering innovation and trade. It is an especially good sign that Bryson and Reding specifically reaffirmed their respective commitments to maintain the US-EU Safe Harbor Framework. It is a vital tool for promoting transatlantic trade and economic growth.”
