TUNIS - Tunisia has issued Resolution No. 77 regarding the accession to the Hague System for the International Registration of Industrial Designs and Resolution No. 78 of August 11, 2011 regarding its accession to Madrid Protocol for the International Registration of Trademarks. The two resolutions were published in the Official Gazette on August 16, 2011.
Accordingly, the Tunisian government will submit the application for the membership of the Hague System and the Madrid protocol.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Hague System for the International Registration of Industrial Designs provides a mechanism for registering a design in countries and/ or intergovernmental organizations member of the Hague Agreement. It is administered by the International Bureau of WIPO located in Geneva, Switzerland.

While the Madrid system for the international registration of marks (the Madrid system) established in 1891 functions under the Madrid Agreement (1891), and the Madrid Protocol (1989). It is also administered by the International Bureau of WIPO.

Thanks to the international procedural mechanism, the Madrid system offers a trademark owner the possibility to have his trademark protected in several countries by simply filing one application directly with his own national or regional trademark office.

The Madrid system also simplifies greatly the subsequent management of the mark, since it is possible to record subsequent changes or to renew the registration through a single procedural step.
